DEPOSIT RETURN SCHEME

What is a deposit return scheme (DRS)?

The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is a UK-wide recycling initiative that will launch on 1 October 2027. It is designed to increase collection and recycling rates for in-scope drinks containers, reduce litter and support a more circular economy. Under the scheme, consumers will pay a refundable deposit when purchasing an eligible drink and receive it back when they return the empty container to a designated return point.

"The Deposit Return Scheme is one of the biggest transformation programmes our industry has undertaken in recent years. By working together across the value chain, we have a unique opportunity to increase recycling, reduce litter and help create a more circular economy for packaging in the UK."

- Tom Fiennes, Director of Sustainability
